This announcement is for a Safe Patient Handling & Mobility (SPHM) RN at the Charles George VA Medical Center. The SPHM RN is a clinical trainer and patient handling professional for the SPHM Program throughout all clinical services of the Western North Carolina VA. This position also provides equipment inventory management for SPHM and Nursing Services. Works autonomously without the readily available supervision of a nurse or physician. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: BSN 3-5 years recent clinical experience Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Provides equipment inventory management for Nursing Services. The incumbent provides support for safety that demonstrates complex judgment under limited supervision of the Associate Director Patient Care Services.(ADPCS) The complexity of duties include collaborating with all clinicians who move and transfer patients, facility management service, supply chain management, and vendors. Directly responsible to ADPCS. Duties and Responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following: SPHM training: Coordinate training of all clinical services on the use of the equipment. SPHM equipment includes, but is not limited to ceiling lifts, floor-based lifts, air assistive technology, stand assist devices, motorized beds, stretchers, chairs, toilets, and friction reducing slides. Train on the use of the equipment for both passive and active application. Train on programmatic compliance importance. Collaborate with Unit Peer Leaders (UPLs - champions for SPHM) to complete training. Track and record training in Talent Management System (TMS). Reviews TMS reports and learning/training data and prepares briefings to senior officials that project training requirements and cost estimates. SPHM consultation: Provides clinical consultation for challenging patient handling and mobility situations. Guides teams of employees in the process of safely extracting Veterans from motor vehicles utilizing available specialized equipment. Conducts walkthroughs to evaluate SPHM equipment, expendables, training opportunities, and compliance with use of equipment. SPHM equipment management: Responds to and troubleshoots SPHM equipment issues throughout facility. Retrieves and inputs work orders for SPHM equipment items. Inspects all equipment for cleanliness and ensures that equipment is in proper working order and tracks repairs. Removes equipment from service that represents patient safety risk and coordinates room closure consideration with management. Provides alternative solutions for mobility in the event equipment needs repair. Coordinates with unit leadership and facility management for timely repair completions. Responds to safety concerns related to equipment items. Removes items from use if warranted. Tracks preventative maintenance. Verifies PMs are completed and coordinates with program coordinator/external contractors when necessary to complete PMs. Collaborates to review life cycle and repair history and life expectancy of equipment to assist with planning replacement in SEPG. Collaborates to select equipment for life cycle replacement and in response to updated or new ergonomic evaluations of clinical care areas. Receives, inspects, identifies and marks SPHM equipment before it is placed into service, and makes certain that expendables are available for support of the equipment. Plays active role in the delivery of equipment and/or expendable supplies throughout the medical center SPHM expendables management: Verification of par levels for all clinical services for associated slings, mats, etc. Routine analysis of availability of stocked items and need for updates/changes. Processes requests for expendable and coordinates with supply chain management control points. Provides clinical staff support for items in short supply/out of stock recommending possible substitutes. Equipment Inventory: Provides overall inventory support and annual inventory process for the SPHM and Nursing Service CMR. These CMRs contain more than 2000 equipment items required for safe delivery of care. Completes routine review of equipment locations and updates electronic inventory list (EIL) in a timely manner to keep inventory lists up to date. When equipment is moved to a new location, the EIL is updated. When new equipment is added, inspects, identifies ad marks before it is placed into service and ensures expendable items are available, if applicable. Conduct annual inventory of SPHM and Nursing equipment using the EIL checklists.
